The Mexico temporary resident visa is best for foreigners who intend to stay in Mexico for more than 180 days and up to four years. In most cases, the immigration process begins with an interview at your country’s Mexican consulate and finalizes in Mexico by doing something called CANJE (an exchange) at the National Immigration Institute (INM). We can help assisting with all the Mexican residency requirements. The CURP number is included in the quote.

"With temporary and permanent residency, you can get a Mexican registration number called a CURP (Clave Unica de Registro de Población – Unique Population Registry Number).

Costs at the Mexican Consulate

• Consular fees are updated every month

• The visa fee, regardless of whether the visa is issued or denied, must be paid on the

day of the appointment.

Validity

• Permanent, Temporary &Temporary Resident Visas with work permit have a validity of

six months from the day they are issued.

• Upon arrival in Mexico, must be exchanged within the first 30 days at the National

Migration Institute (INM) for a Card.

The LFD contemplates the payment of migratory rights for the different and specific migratory procedures for foreigners and expatriates with temporary or permanent residences in Mexico requested by the INM. Due to the above, the rights payment rates increase every year.

Benefits of Both Temporary and Permanent Residency in Mexico

Firstly, with both temporary and permanent residency, you can get a Mexican registration number called a CURP (Clave Unica de Registro de Población – Unique Population Registry Number).

Similar to the US social security number, the CURP allows you to:

• Open accounts at any bank.

• Buy and register a car.

• Get a Mexican driver’s license (without giving up your foreign one).

•Join the national healthcare program with IMSS (Mexican Institute for Social Security).

Alternatively, you may apply for private health insurance.

• Get a homeowner’s exemption from paying capital gains tax on a future sale of a

Mexican property.

• Enjoy special rates and discounts, such as transport and entry to sites and events.

Temporary Residency - Pros

• Maybe you are unsure of how long you want to stay in Mexico. With temporary

residency you can stay up to four years.

• Temporary residency holders can keep foreign plates on a car for the duration of their

residency (max. four years).

• Eligibility for temporary residency is less restricted. For instance, it requires lower

savings/income than permanent residency.

Temporary Residency - Cons

Temporary residents

• Need permission to work in Mexico.

• Can only renew their status for up to a total of four years without leaving Mexico to

visit a consulate.

• Therefore, after four years, you have two options: begin the process of temporary

residency again, or change your status to Permanent Resident.
